SDAIE Strategy

 Graphic Organizer is a great tool to represent ideas and content. It is a great visual aid, fun and easy to comprehend for all students, including visual learners, English Language Learners and those with special needs. This graphic organizer was used in teaching the basic components of a coordinate graphing system by showing each component and including a definition right there. Organizers are specially helpful in math and science, where visualization is more important and effective than actual word definition.

My Name story:

"Smita" is Hindi word derived from "smit" in Sanskrit, meaning smile. Smita mean a person who smiles. My parents chose this name for me. Although I was born in north India, this name was very common in southern states of India. In fact, at the time I was born, there was a very popular actress in India who was well known and awarded several times for portraying Indian women from varied socio-economic backgrounds as strong characters. I have watched almost all of her movies and even though, she's been dead for many years, many characters played by her have been my inspiration in real life.

I used the following survey to assess literacy levels of students in my class. I wanted it to be very informal and not intimidate the students with yet another assessment test. Hence, I chose the title "My Preferences". It turned out to be a good decision because the students answered the survey thinking it was something about their likes/dislikes. The questions about their feelings for reading and writing were  targeted at assessing their interest and motivation in these areas. The students were quite open and honest in saying they read over 15 or zero books. Specific titles of the books they read in summer gave me the idea of their reading levels. Lastly, a short description of their first day at school served the purpose of assessing their grammar and writing skills.
